The City of York is situated in the Vale of York giving excellent access to the many attractions of Yorkshire including the North Yorkshire Moors (Bronte and Heartbeat country, an hour and fifteen minutes by car), the Yorkshire Dales National Park (Herriot country, two hours by car), the beautiful East Yorkshire Coast (an hour and fifteen minutes by car), as well as the towns of Harrogate (forty minutes by car) and Leeds (forty-five minutes by car).

What:

City Walls of York

The most complete example of medieval city walls still standing in England.

The City Screen Cinema


What:

Cinema located in a stunning contemporary re-development of the old Yorkshire Herald press works on the riverside. Shows the latest blockbusters as well as more 'art-house' films. Clifford’s Tower


What:

The original mound of Clifford's Tower, with a timber structure at the top, was constructed by William the Conqueror in 1068. It was rebuilt in stone in about 1244 by Henry III as the keep of his castle. The tower gives sweeping panoramic views of historic York and the surrounding countryside.

York Castle Museum


What:

York Castle Museum is one of Britain's leading museums of everyday life. It shows how people used to live by displaying thousands of household objects and by recreating rooms, shops, streets - and even prison cells.
Walk through the recreated Victorian street, Kirkgate, which combines real shop fittings and stock with modern sound and light effects, to evoke an atmosphere of Victorian Britain. The museum's past as two prison buildings is also explored with a look at conditions in 18th century gaols and at its most famous former prisoner - highwayman Dick Turpin, who was hanged in 1739 for horse stealing.

The Jorvic Viking Centre


What:

At JORVIK, you will journey through a reconstruction of the actual Viking-Age streets which once stood on this site, still with sounds and smells! The houses and shops are laid out in exactly the same pattern as they were at 5.30pm, 25th October, AD975, and even the faces of the people you see have been reconstructed from Viking skulls. NB can get very busy at peak times – pre-book to jump the queues (£1 surcharge per ticket)!
